MOUNT PRAU TREKKING



With a height of 2,565 above sea level, Mount Prau in local means boat. This is because the mountain itself looks like a boat from far. It will be an easy and short hike to get to the top of Mount Prau as the route is also painless! Mount Prau is located in Dieng, which is approximately w4 hours away from central Yogyakarta. To see the sunrise, hikers usually start climbing as early as 2.00 am from the base camp.

If you are here for the first time, you may consider to find a guide to bring you up to the summit for safety reasons as your hike will start at night. The trek starts by going through farm plantations and also a pine forest. You will reach the first pit stop of Pos 1 in 20 minutes to catch your breath. The next journey will be slightly steeper and it usually takes around an hour to get to the second pit stop or Pos 2 which also known as Semendung. To know that you are at the right place, you will be able to see the bright light of tower radio transmitter mast.

After another hiking session of 20 minutes, you will reach the first peak of Mount Prau and wait for the sunrise along with other hikers there. You will be able to see another two great mountains of Yogyakarta, the Sindoro Mountain and Sumbing Mountain with each rising more than 3,500 m above sea level. The second peak at Mount Prau stands at 2,600 m and it is merely a few minutes walk away from the first peak. From this summit, you will get to experience a more satisfying view which includes other nature attractions in Yogyakarta such as the green Dieng Village, Telaga Warna Lake and Kawah Sikidang Crater.

Safety tips


  •     Avoid hiking at Mount Prau from November to January as it is the rainy season and it can be dangerous for climbers.

  •     Keep a safe pace and be careful while hiking as some slopes are steep and rocky.


Insiders’ tips


  •     It is advisable to stay in Dieng for a day if you wish to catch the sunrise at Mount Prau. If you stay in Yogyakarta central, it might take more time for you to reach here.

  •     If you are a professional climber, it might be faster for you to reach the summit of Mount Prau as the route is quite easy. Still, plan your time ahead so you won’t miss the sunrise!

  •     Dry season is good for hiking. Plan your trip between May to September when the weather at Mount Prau is nicer.

  •     There is a campsite here at Mount Prau where you can choose to spend a night and enjoy the outdoors freely.

  •     The weather at Mount Prau’s summit could drop to as low as 0 degree. Prepare yourself with a jacket and proper clothes for your comfort.
